Finishing wood

Protect it, and bring out the grain.

5 min read

A finish protects wood from moisture and wear.

Common finishes

  • Wipe-on oil: easy, natural look, less protection
  • Polyurethane: durable, good for tabletops
  • Paint: hides cheaper wood; prime first
  • Always test on scrap wood first

Oily rags can catch fire

Rags soaked with oil finishes can heat up and ignite on their own. Lay them flat outdoors to dry or keep them in a sealed metal container filled with water, and dispose of them as the product label says.
