Choosing wood for a project

Softwood, hardwood and plywood.

5 min read

The right wood depends on what you're making, your budget and your tools.

Common choices

  • Pine: inexpensive and easy to work, but dents easily
  • Poplar: an affordable hardwood that paints well
  • Oak and maple: strong and durable, harder to work
  • Plywood: stable sheets for cabinets and backs
  • Choose straight boards without big knots, cracks or twists
