Old and treated wood can be beautiful and useful, but needs care.
Be careful with
- Pressure-treated lumber: wear a mask and gloves, and never burn it
- Old painted wood, which may contain lead paint; don't sand it without testing
- Hidden nails and screws, which can damage blades
- Pallets: look for an HT stamp, meaning heat-treated, and avoid ones marked MB or with unknown markings
