Lumber is sold by nominal size, the rough size before drying and planing. The actual size is smaller.
Examples
- A 2x4 is about 1½ by 3½ inches
- A 1x6 is about ¾ by 5½ inches
- Hardwoods are often sold in quarters: 4/4 is about 1 inch rough, thinner once surfaced
- Always measure the actual board before cutting
